Mather Point offers many park visitors their first glimpse into the depths of the Grand Canyon, gazing down into the chasm from this perch along the South Rim near the visitor center. Buttes, temples, amphitheaters, and tributary canyons fill the view in a dazzling panorama that looks up and down the canyon and clear across to the heights of the Kaibab Plateau on the North Rim.
This view looks over the Colorado River upstream to the east where Cape Royal marks the end of the Walhalla Plateau and the landscape is adorned with place names like "temple" and "shrine" in an attempt to convey the overwhelming grandeur of the scenery.
Elevations are shown in feet.
